Disclosure Day – Movie Reviews by Ry!

Disclosure Day – Of Skies and Conspiracies: We are … Not Alone

The power of film is filled with angst, adrenaline and zeal.  To see a story unfold, it brings about many layers, leading to an escape that pulls you in to feel the moment.  It is a powerful hook that if it hits right, it can lead to a wonderful experience.  In this review, I look at the latest Sci-Fi film to hit the big screen.  Through the aspect of moments and mystery, Disclosure Day strikes that everlasting accord of … what is truly beyond the stars.

As the world turns, so does the mystery of the stars … which is one man’s mission as he attempts to disclose the truth: are we truly alone?  As mentioned, the power of film rides on many tides.  No matter the situation, characters or genre, one looks at the screen with hopes of a genuine experience.  With this latest entry from Steven Spielberg, he balances action and Sci-fi to strike that ultimate question: are we truly alone?  The film begins with a unique take on the drop-in method, where we find Dr. Daniel Kellner (Josh O’Connor), is on the run with sensitive material he has stolen from the government.  Through an atypical approach with general introductions, we head into a mysterious ‘who, what, where’ kind of questioning where the audience slowly pieces the puzzle (of the plot) together.  As the film progresses, it becomes a high stakes ‘cat-and-mouse’ game that propels the mystery through Sci-Fi motifs.  Each element becomes a delicate thread of moments, where conversations and revelations are prudent to Dr. Kellner’s mission.  The building of moments is driven by the methodical direction, providing a unique spot for each interactive conversation to add to the mystery.  For all the car chases, near death moments and obscure Sci-Fi elements, it is that awe in the journey that grips the audience to see, feel and want to explore that question of worth and existence.  The value of life is a heavy set that weaves through everything, creating a layer that positions each character (you can view the list of actors/actresses at the film’s IMdb page – link) to see what is important on a personal and societal level.  Combined with the enthralling action, this film showcases the strength of great filmmaking.

As more things come to the light, the meaningful stature starts to waver through the onus of odd humor and convenient plot driven sequences.  These scenes create a subtle distraction to the ‘cat-and-mouse’ driven elements, but don’t completely deter from the main plot’s overall focus.  As things slowly come together, we head into a third act that drives home the mystery.  As things become a mixture of awe and more convenience, we lead into a reflective like climax and epilogue.  Disclosure Day is a thrilling Sci-Fi adventure.  If you are a fan of Spielberg or Sci-Fi, this is one for you.  In the end, I think it is worth the full price of admission.

Full Score – 4 out of 5 (Full Price)
