Deadpool & Wolverine – Movie Reviews by Ry!
Deadpool & Wolverine – Satire in Red and Yellow: A Marvel Bromance
Film, a medium that speaks meaning in many ways. From the delicate threads of story to the emotional overtures of character, what pulls at an individual is the manner of the escape. For all the critiques I may have of any film (good or bad), it will always come down to that indelible feeling of escape. If I can feel that grip … then the journey was worth it. In this review, I look at the latest entry in the MCU. From auspicious feelings to pushing the genre, Deadpool & Wolverine represents what we love in film … an experience for the fans.
In a journey that spans worlds and timelines, one uncanny mercenary and a downtrodden X-man will have to team up and become … true heroes. To speak about comic book films, one of the immediate thoughts to cross a film fan’s mind is the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Within a collection of 30 plus films, it is a decade’s worth of imaginative storytelling. Each chapter has provided a spark of intrigue, but also a wavering of feelings. No matter how strong a film has been, the enjoyment of the escape has always been there. With this latest entry, it is a leveling of circumstances that pulls in certain properties (From the now defunct Fox Studios’ Marvel Brand), into the greater world of the MCU. It all begins with an unsung hero, Wade Wilson/Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds). In this latest film, you find a person that is down on his luck, trying to rediscover his purpose in the greater world. After a series of character (and comedic) moments, he is pulled into a web of conspiracies by an individual from the TVA, Mr. Paradox (Matthew MacFadyen). After a quick exposition dump/conversation, the film thrust Deadpool on a singular purpose: saving his universe from utter destruction with the help of an unlikely partner … Logan/Wolverine (Hugh Jackman). From this point, the film becomes a journey that focuses on the genre itself, building character-like situations that revel in satirical moments. From the duo’s buddy like comradery to the over-the-top action, physical gags and pop culture one-liners, the journey of self-deprecation reflects the situation while providing a wealth of enjoyment. Within the onslaught of putting a mirror upon themselves (Marvel, Disney and the genre), it is a character piece that is raunchy, surreal but hearty within conviction. The creative juices of the filmmakers are on full display, pushing towards an edge that showcases … true potential of the brand.
As Deadpool and Wolverine maneuver through an onslaught of action and comedic scenes, it is their interactions that provide wealth within character and motive. For all the clichés that abound, it is that inherited purpose within these individuals that provides slight brevity within a hearty grip. When push comes to shove, it is this poignant detail that adds worth to the commonalities of the comic book genre. As circumstances turn into predictable motifs, we head into a third act that raises the bar on all the satirical aspects of the genre, leading to a showdown that should be left to the individual experience. Let me say … the finale is a truly heartfelt moment that provides closure to die hard fans of Marvel. Deadpool & Wolverine pushes what it means to be … a comic book film. If you enjoy the characters, marvel or anything satirical/raunchy … this is one for you. In the end … it is an award worthy experience on the big screen.
