Marty Supreme – Movie Reviews by Ry!

Marty Supreme – Money, Dogs and Ping Pong: Let’s Dream Big

In the pursuit of your own goal, how far will you go to achieve it?  From prowess to conviction, we are pulled to a certainty, no matter the outcome.  For a journey built on unpredictability, this pursuit could be filled with magic or distraught.  For film, this kind of character tale, if done right, can bring about an unforgettable experience.  In this review, I look at the latest character drama film to hit the big screen.  From its strong characters to its unpredictable direction, Marty Supreme is a riveting tale that shows what it means to pursue a dream … even if it cost you everything.

Marty Mauser (Timothee Chalamet) is a young man that, no matter what it cost, will achieve his dream.  Through the strings of a creative point, one can look at a journey and see something different.  This unique take can break the basics of filmmaking, pushing forward with another kind of experience.  If it pays off, it is a risk that leads to a film like this.  In the beginning, we get introduced to Marty Mauser, a young man living in New York City in the 1950’s.  Through general conversations and raw interactions, we learn that Mauser is deadly focused on achieving one dream in his life: being the best player in the world of Table Tennis (plot point).  With this as his ultimate focus, we head down a characterized journey of an unwavering drive, one that may lead to unexpected fallout for those in Mauser’s path.  The things that he does to achieve unfathomed success (in this sport) add to the unpredictable nature of the ‘dream quest’ storyline.  The filmmakers stagger through an off-the-cuff directive that moves away from the purity of a cliché hero, putting the focus on the unhinging perspective of human pride.  From his rambunctious attitude at the British Open to his con artist like schemes with his friends and family (view the list of actors/actresses at the film’s IMdb page – link), you have a sense of flawed individuals that have a hazy complexion of morality.  The conflicting nature of passion and arrogance creates a grip on the rigid aspect of our characters’ humanity.  As more and more things lead down a rabbit hole, we head down a path that brings you along an unpredictable journey filled with real life consequences for Mauser and everyone involved.

With a journey filled with unexpected detail, the character build-up is one that gets lost in the fray.  Even when individuals come in and out of Mauser’s life with no rhyme or reason, the dialogue drives everything through an emotional grip.  The authenticity of interactions is what makes you see that realism in each character, giving you a ‘day in the life’ kind of feel in the rambunctious like tale.  With everything unraveling in Mauser’s life, we head into a third act where growth and conviction come full circle.  With only one chance to succeed, we head into a revelation like climax and epilogue.  Marty Supreme is a tale that brings a new perspective of chasing your dreams.  If you are a fan of unpredictability or character like tales, this is one for you.  For me, this film is truly worth seeing on the big screen.
