Spiderman: Brand New Day – Identity of a Web Slinger: A Marvel Tale

Upon the lines of conviction, one might ponder … what is life’s purpose.  We look at it through specific lens, but the course is filled with variables that will rise or fall upon choice.  To see the threads that push and pull is one thing, but to create a story with these elements is another.  For a tale to rise above, no matter if it is action or romance, it will elevate the experience.  In this review, I look at the latest entry from Marvel Studios.  As we head into a new chapter of web-slinging, we move through a tale that rises above its comic book roots.  For all the little things that might deter, Spiderman: Brand New Day is a somber tale of that shows what it truly means to be … Peter Parker. 

As our friendly neighborhood hero swings into action, he is confronted with an enemy of unknown roots that trigger changes beyond his control.  With everything on the line, will Spiderman be able to save NYC and himself once more.  When it comes to comic book films, there are things that stand out as obvious or predictable.  From the ‘discovery of powers’ to the ‘ultimate threat’, the tropes that litter throughout the genre begs the question of … can the experience elevate beyond the norms?  From Marvel to DC, it becomes a delicate thread of bringing the thrills without deterring from what fans expect.  For a creative team, there are ways to ‘stick’ to the source without deviating from what makes the hero … a hero.  With this latest entry from Marvel Studios, we see a rise above the status quo that builds to a chapter that is thrilling and grounded.  As this latest story of Peter Parker (Tom Holland) begins, it picks up in the aftermath of the previous film, where he has been living alone and diving into his web slinger’s persona.  As years past by, becoming the icon for the city has its accolades … but the drawbacks of being ‘alone’ has caused a bit of trauma in his life.  This threading of personal growth elevates the situation, but also adds layers to Parker’s latest conflict: An unknown enemy is causing havoc across the city, with the goal of finding something held by Damage Control.  As Peter swings around NYC trying to discover the truth, the story weaves between scenes of action, comedy and drama, creating a journey that breeds a bit of familiarity, but drives a deeper thread in the investigation of truly … who is the ultimate assailant.  As the merging of genres occurs, it elevates the journey into a deeper characterization about themes of identity and personal connections.  This threading drives a methodical approach to the comic book motif, pitting Parker’s past memories with his present life, where old faces and foes create personal interactions that drive emotional shades into his identity.  As the dilemma of what it means to be Spiderman and Peter Parker comes to head, it begs a troubling question about what it means to fight for a good cause.  The typical ‘good vs. evil’ mantra is thrown away, as the elevated chapter of our hero creates an experience that is thrilling … but reflective.

As things kick into high gear, certain truths are revealed that provide a mirror of what it means to be Peter Parker and Spiderman.  This threading of heroic feats with epic action set pieces is propped up by Spiderman’s interaction with other notable characters (you can view the actors/actress list at the film’s IMdb page – link), creating a place where witty dialogue feels familiar but wholesome, propping up the secondary characters to feel authentic.  With everything coming to light, and Spiderman faced with a conflicted choice, this leads to a third act of amazing action scenes and elevated dramatic interactions.  As the personal barriers come down, we head into a full circle climax and epilogue that provides a wholesome look at what it means to be, Spiderman.  Spiderman: Brand New Day is another amazing entry in the long running Marvel franchise.  If you are a fan of comic books, Marvel or the Spiderman lore … this is one for you.  I believe this is a great time at the theaters; you will not be disappointed.
