The Drama – Truths of I Do … Love’s Introspective

Through the days that move us along, There are moments that become places of reflection and truth.  As you look at your own guise, what is it that becomes real … especially when another comes into your life.  The tantalizing trail of romance is as much as a trope as it is fickle, but the soothing sense of the journey can be unique.  When it comes to film, love stories can be predictable.  Every once in a while, with a bit of creativity, it can be something great.  In this review, I look at the latest romance film.  Through the aspect of genuine romance, we head on a journey that becomes much more than love.  Even with a bit of convenience, The Drama is an intriguing look at what it means to say … I Do.

As that magical day fast approaches for an engaged couple, an unexpected twist leads them to question … is getting married even worth it?  Tales of romance can move down many paths.  From high school flings to unexpected connections, love can build from any typical foundation.  Upon that course, the grip can feel tantalizing … but also familiar to a fault.  For this film, romance may be the initial foundation … but the journey becomes something more.  As the story begins, we meet Emma (Zendaya) and Charlie (Robert Pattinson), as we come into their lives at the peak of their wedding planning.  Through a series of witty conversational scenes, everything seems to be moving happily towards that amazing day.  This all changes after a double date with close friends, and revelations of the past come into play.  When the unsettling memories come about, it leads the couple to question their love … and if the wedding should even happen.  From this point, the tale moves beyond the typical romance foundation, building up the fragile complexity of love and trust.  As their relationship is put through a character like microscope, their conversations spark raw clashes of human worth.  This leads to a slew of folly-like circumstances that are unpredictable, but provide an honest reflection of who Emma and Charlie are to one another.  It is through this deep characterization that the romantic motifs rise above one-dimensional fervor, providing a journey that becomes a wholesome spin on building connections, both mentally and emotionally. 

As each moment becomes a layer of what it means to understand, it also provokes caution and anxieties in the characters … and the wedding.  The unnerving of the situation provides a mirror of what it means to love, but it stumbles as the strings connect back through convenient plot devices.  Even as things are strung together, we head into a third act that is emotional, unnerving, but ends on a climax and epilogue that brings our characters (and themes) full circle.  The Drama is an introspective look at romance.  If you’re a fan of character, romance or conversational style tales, you will enjoy this film.  It is available on streaming, but I believe this would have been fun to see on the big screen.
