Coyote vs. Acme – Looney in the Courtroom … That’s All Folks!

The genuine touch of an escape is in the ability to feel something.  From an epic novel to the comical dealings of a manga, the visuals that pop out become a prowess of what triggers within.  This is a path towards liveliness, one where creativity is a risk worth taking.  For film, that genuine appeal becomes a manner of what and why.  No matter the path, there is a hope that the escape is truly … one worth the leap.  In this review, I look at the latest comedy to hit the big screen.  Built off an interesting premise, Coyote vs. Acme might seem like a gimmick, but it becomes a satire that puts a mirror on what it means to be committed … even with cartoonish eyes.

At his wits ends in his pursuit of the Roadrunner, Wiley Coyote decides that it is all the failures of the Acme corporation.  What seems looney becomes a path of truth … for everyone involved.  Upon the surface, this is a film that has traveled a long path to hit the big screen.  For the journey at hand, what seems to be risky becomes a complexion of true satire … and heart.  As we dive into this tale, we come into a world where those lovable Looney Tune characters live in the real world.  Through the drop-in method, we have a ‘nefarious’ prologue before we head into the present, where we find Wiley Coyote hot on his latest attempt to catch the Roadrunner.  After he fails again, he has a new idea born from a random TV commercial; he will sue the Acme Corporation for all the faulty devices he has purchased from them over the years.  This leads Coyote to hire the lawyer from the commercial, Kevin Avery (Will Forte) in his pursuit of taking them down (main plot).  Once the foundational elements are in place, we head down a path that dances between the lines of satire and slapstick style humor, bringing forth an uncanny look at the typical ‘David vs. Goliath’ motif.  On the surface, the gimmick aspect might seem passe, but as the case continues to unravel, it leads to a place where cliches are just a grip for a deeper thematic layer of society.  This comes about strongly because of our two main leads (Coyote and Avery), where realism and nostalgia slice through the ongoing mystery of Acme’s past.  As they pursue many leads, the journey becomes less about its comical overtures and more a reflection of honor, ignorance and greed.  As the case sheds some light on the Acme Corporation and their weasel-y like characters (you can view the rest of the cast on the film’s IMdb Page – link), the enveloping of typical archetypes becomes an about face of elevated expectation.  This drives that escape of the looney-ness of the cartoon into a natural mirror to what it means to be … real.

As the criminal case starts to unravel, the journey continues to dance between harden realism and scenes of comic relief.  The filmmakers do a great job in its complemental approach to the nature of genre, knowing when the raise the stakes … and the lessen the load through slapstick appeal beneath the satirical dialogue.  As things reach a crossroads, we head down a path of self-reflection.  As Coyote and Avery have to come to terms with their own guise, we head into a third act that brings everything full circle.  As the case reaches national attention, we come to a climax full of emotions and an epilogue fitting of the looney tunes name.  Coyote vs. Acme goes beyond its looney roots to be something more.  If you are a fan of Looney Tunes, satire or creative films, this is one for you.  For its long path to reach the big screen … I say it is worth the full price to see it.
