Enola Holmes 3 – Movie Reviews by Ry!
Enola Holmes 3 – Bride of Mysteries: Holmes of a Tales
Moving along the path, how far can one reach? This is a question marked by situations of the time, but also by chapters left to unfold. For sequels, it is a manner of hoping the charm will continue, but it might not always be the case in the end. In this review, I look at the next chapter of a popular detective tale. Through a journey of twists and mystery, Enola Holmes 3 doesn’t spark that prowess of originality … but it leads us on a path where solving the case can still be fun.
From marriage to disappearance, one detective will have to solve another case before she gets to say … ‘I Do’. As stories go, so does the path of creativity and elaboration. No matter if it’s a novel, comic book or television series, the constant push to move characters and situations becomes a mark of how far and how long. As the story expands, it becomes a delicate balance between just enough or too much. With this latest sequel, it is an expanded tale that falls in the trap of the same old familiar twists. We begin the story through a flash forward (with voice over narration), where Enola Holmes (Millie Bobby Brown) is on the verge of getting married to the love of her life in Malta. After a chaotic action sequence that derails the wedding, she finds out that her brother, Sherlock Holmes (Henry Cavill), has been kidnapped. This becomes the catalyst for the rest of the film, where Enola dives into her detective work and tries to find out the reason behind the mystery. From this point, the filmmakers play with time to peel back the layers of the situation, adding intrigue to the way Enola puts together clues like previous films:
Narrative Exposition and Fourth Wall Breaking.
This adds a unique dynamic to the tale, pulling the audience into the discovery. As each layer is lifted, it provides a creativity through a web that becomes a mix bag of nostalgia and characterization. For all that feels cliché, seeing Enola struggle with her identity builds up this idea of what it means to be a ‘Holmes’. It is this poignant detail that elevates certain moments, creating a journey that is predictable but fun.
As Enola puts all the pieces together, it becomes a revelation that continues to dance between creative twists and blanketed nostalgia. Even as trivial situations happen, the charm of our titular character continues to keep us entertained. As the final truth comes to the forefront, we head into a third act of unique setups, heavy expositional dialogue, and a climax fitting for a third movie. Enola Holmes 3 is a fun entry in this inquisitive detective series. If you are a fan of detective tales or anything from the Sherlock Holmes IP, this is one for you. It is available on Netflix, but I think this would have been fun to see on the big screen.
Full Score – 3.5 out of 5 (Matinee)
