Scary Movie (2026) – Stabs and Gags: Spoof of Lost Potential
Films are a roller coaster of ideas and journeys. It is a point where genuine creativity has potential, but the rush comes in the outcome. No matter what genre of film, you hope the experience is unique. From expectation to reality, it will always come to that one question, was it worth it? In this review, I look at a return to a popular IP. From aloof situations to topical gags, Scary Movie (2026) is a journey where horror and laughs become a stab of lost potential.
After many years, our formidable group of original misfits have to survive spoofs and mayhem to stop … a killer? As mentioned earlier, films are a roller coaster of many things. When you step upon this ride, it becomes a twisting of characters, genres and journeys … whipping you along with a hopeful outcome of raw enjoyment. With this latest spoof horror, it provides a hodge podge of situational moments, but the fraying of the obvious becomes its downfall. For the positive, this latest entry in the franchise provides a reason to bring back familiar faces from the first two films (you can view the list of actors/actresses on the film’s IMDb page – link). The return of the original characters creates a rush that leads to the hook for this latest entry: Ghostface has returned with a vengeance to kill the original cast and their kids (Plot Point). From this cliché premise, we move through a series of slapstick and raunchy sight gags that mix social commentary into the dissection of the horror genre. The collective of the journey is an up-and-down affair, where enjoyment is struck with the negative: the false sense of what makes you laugh. The harsh realities of the ‘spoof’ concept is that the punchline can only work if the repetition doesn’t become too obvious. The nostalgic draw clashes with forced moments of everyday satire, creating a place where it fragments the ‘overall’ jab of the genre for the sake of recognition. As such, you realize the truth of the tale … the filmmakers try too hard to impress instead of letting the gags feel authentic.
As situations slowly unravel and deaths begin, the fragment of the film’s identity slowly fades when the creative team decides to put a focus on what is the main draw of this spoof: the original characters. This shift helps to bring the spoofing of the genre into focus, creating moments where nostalgia and sight gags start to hit. With a renewed sense of the draw, everything leads to a third act of cliché twists that hit with the gags. As the obvious becomes natural, it leads to a full circle climax. Scary Movie (2026) is a returning IP that fails to deliver. For fans of this property or spoof films, you might find some enjoyment here. I would say for everyone else … this could be a fun time as a rental at home.
