6 Underground – Agents in the Shadows … Action UNLEASHED

Watching films is all about the experience.  With subtle excitement, there is hope that when you go to the theaters or put on a stream, the escape will have some value of entertainment.  With an action film, the hope is that the adrenaline button is pushed to a degree.  6 Underground attempts to push that button, but push it to the utmost extremes.  Within a basic story, this action film pushes forward what it means to be completely insane.  6 Underground has its flaws, but it is an experience where you simply, enjoy the ride.

In a world where terror reigns supreme, a group of untraceable agents move in the shadows to do the job that others cannot.  Leaving their previous lives behind, six individuals put everything on the line for the ultimate good.  This film has a generic outline that is there to do two things: Introduce the audience to the characters and the loose plot based around the ‘good vs. evil’ theme.  Directed by Michael Bay, he uses the basics as the foundation, but doesn’t move forward with any real development.  For him, this is a sandbox built upon style over substance.  You have a linear directive that is linked between action sequences, cheesy one-liners and over-the-top car chases.  The journey is there to showcase the technical aspect of the action.  From the car chase in Florence Italy, the wisecracking dialogue between One (Ryan Reynolds) and his group of misfits to the world hopping between Las Vegas, Hong Kong and central Asia, the idea is to enjoy the freneticism.  That lack of general development is pushed aside for simple fun. 

As the story moves into the second half, it pushes all the action to the forefront.  As the six agents plan to topple a dictator, it leads into one massive action sequence.  Through a mixture of gunfights, hand-to-hand combat and an outrageous scenario involving an ultra-powerful magnet, this becomes the centerpiece of pushing the genre to the limit.  This leads into the ultimate conformation, heading into the familiar ‘good triumphs over evil’ climax.  6 Underground is an action film that provides a backdrop of non-subtle detail.  The idea of story is pushed aside, but there is a lot of fun to be had.  If you’re a fan of Bay, action films or just want to escape into the unbelievable, this is one for you.  It is available on Netflix, but if it was in theaters, it is worth a Matinee.
